Indoor sports for a rainy day (or a sunny one)

Indoor sports for a rainy day (or a sunny one)

With its family-friendly beaches and plentiful hiking trails, Hong Kong's rugged natural landscape lends itself to outdoor activities and adventures. However, when the summer’s notorious humidity and seasonal rains settle in, even the most dedicated fitness junkie can be dissuaded from venturing outside.

Thankfully, Hong Kong is also home to a variety of indoor sports centres and activities — here are a few to try out next time a storm is brewing.

Trampolining: Ryze, Hong Kong

Trampolining: Ryze, Hong Kong

It’s easy to forget that so many of Hong Kong’s treasures are secreted away in buildings. One such nugget is Ryze, a 7,000 sq ft trampoline park tucked away on the third floor of one of Quarry Bay’s commercial skyscrapers. Since opening in 2014, it’s fast establishing itself as one of the most popular indoor sports centres on the Island, facilitating people of all ages to bounce around at leisure for up to two hours.

On entry, a pulsating soundtrack backdrops a series of adjoining trampolines: welcome to the action-packed ‘Ninja obstacle course’, festooned with ropes, tightropes and swings, plus jumping boards positioned above spacious foam pits; it’s a perfect introduction to trampolining. Upon arrival all visitors are asked to sign a safety waiver, and are kitted out with an obligatory wristband and special ‘gripping socks’. We bounced a while on Ninja before heading down to the 1/F to explore the recently added extension.

Alongside the trampolines are trapezes and flying foxes (rest assured, foam crash mats soften all landings) and a dedicated zone for children’s birthday parties. Friendly and observant staff monitor the entire space, and there are plenty of sofas for time-outs or non-trampolining guests to lounge on throughout. Trampolining can be quite an intense lower-body workout, especially if done over a prolonged period of time, so don’t be surprised if you find yourself in need of a rest after your first 15 minutes.

While standard ‘Open Jump’ sessions welcome all ages and abilities, if you’re looking for something a little more structured, Ryze also offers the children-only KidJump sessions (Mon-Fri, 9-10am); Family Night (Mon, 6-9pm) offers discounted access for up to four members of the same family; Trix Sessions for those looking to polish their technique (Mon and Fri, 6-9pm), and Club Ryze where guests can bounce around in the dark with music and lasers (Sat and Sun, 7-9pm).

Mini Golf: Strokes, Hong Kong

Mini Golf: Strokes, Hong Kong

Dubbed Hong Kong’s first ever ‘crazy golf and lifestyle club’, 80s-themed Strokes is a one-stop entertainment spot located in the heart of Causeway Bay.

Pick your putter and choose between two nine-hole courses, playfully monikered ‘Coachella Valley’ and ‘Palm Springs’, which riff on old-school California with a mishmash of eye-popping neon decor, curved fluorescent lighting and an array of potted plants and cacti. Both courses are open to all levels of expertise and take around 40 minutes to complete; if you’re looking for more of a challenge, try your luck at Coachella Valley, which offers plenty of unexpected twists and turns, including a mega loop-the-loop.

Mini golf might be the main draw at Strokes, but once you’ve wrapped up the game, it’s worth swinging into the adjoining restaurant-bar to continue the fun with fruity cocktails and Western comfort bites (think churros and chicken waffles). Should you be looking for even more entertainment, simply slip behind the inconspicuous fridge door to discover The Den, an atmospheric lounge doubling as an all-ages games room rocking verdant outlooks over Victoria Park.

Strokes is suitable for all ages, but should Mum and Dad want to putt-putt a deux, there’s an onsite playroom (for kids aged 2-9), complete with babysitter supervision during weekends.

Ice Skating: The Rink @ Elements, Hong Kong

Ice Skating: The Rink @ Elements, Hong Kong

Conveniently located in one of Kowloon’s most popular mega malls, The Rink is a 17,200 sq-ft ice arena offering a wallet-friendly, indoor sports activity at any time of year.

The Rink handily operates via an automated Octopus system which enables you to pay-as-you-skate. Sessions are open-timed, so visitors can rock as they wish, pay the HK$20 admission fee (which includes equipment hire) and seamlessly tap in and out using their card for an average of HK $1 per minute.

Skates are provided as part of the entrance fee as are playful animal-themed safety skate-rails for kids. If it’s your first time on the ice, we recommend enlisting the help of one of The Rink’s experienced coaches to help you find your feet. Classes — available as one-off sessions or in bundles — range from private to small and larger groups, and cover everything from the basics to Michelle Kwan-worthy skating techniques.

What’s more, The Rink has been designed with sustainability in mind, using special absorber tech which allows for significantly lower energy consumption. Just remember to wrap up in layers and gloves to keep warm!
