Hong Kong's most innovative dim sum restaurants
So you reckon you’ve been there, seen it, done it when it comes to dim sum? Well, you’re wrong. So wrong, in fact. Dim sum is one of the most popular kinds of meal in Hong Kong and the city’s chefs are constantly experimenting with new ideas and looking to one up each other. Try any of the following restaurants if you don’t believe us.
Dimdimsum
There are several Dimdimsum in Hong Kong and such is the restaurant’s popularity, it has spread to Shanghai. What sets Dimdimsum apart from the crowd is its arresting fusion dishes. We’re talking the likes of seafood-stuffed eggplant with teriyaki sauce and spring rolls with shrimp and Thousand Island dressing.
Duddell’s
Michelin-starred, Duddell’s is one of the classiest places to enjoy a meal in Hong Kong. But just because it’s classy doesn’t mean the menu is conservative. Many traditional dim sum dishes are given exquisite twists here. Don’t miss the likes of the abalone puff with diced chicken or the jazzed up siu mai dumpling that crams in pork, shrimp, scallop and caviar.
Hexa
A relative newcomer to the city’s dining scene, Hexa opened in 2017 and immediately caused a stir thanks to its classic Cantonese fare updated with contemporary flair. Innovative dim sum to sample here includes the steamed spinach dumplings with cheese and cheong fun stuffed with Kurobuta pork.
Mott 32
Promising ‘a modern approach to Chinese cuisine’, Mott 32 is one of the best dining experiences in all Hong Kong. Its contemporary dim sum is stunning. Must-haves include the Australian wagyu beef puff and the South Australian scallop, garoupa, caviar and gold leaf and egg white dumplings.
Yum Cha
Another local specialist in cute dim sum, Yum Cha now has four branches across town such is its popularity. The restaurant’s vomiting custard buns are a constant on Hong Kong Instagram feeds and the doggy sausage rolls and BBQ piggy buns are almost too adorable to eat.
Dim Sum Icon
Dim Sum Icon’s cutesy food is perfect Instagram fodder. The restaurant’s cartoon partnerships change regularly, so what you can expect depends on what they have organised when you visit. In the past there have been Miffy coconut puddings, Gudetama custard buns, Garfield-themed shrimp dumplings and Kanahei sausage rolls.
Man Mo Dim Sum
A specialist in fusion dim sum, Swiss-born chef Nicolas Elalouf isn’t afraid to take traditional Hong Kong dishes and revamp them with an international spin. Winners to look out for at Man Mo Dim Sum include the crispy fried Nutella balls and tomato mozzarella dumplings with fresh basil.
