Hongkongers love a good cocktail. Whether it’s served in a martini glass or a miniature bathtub (yes, such a cocktail does exist here), drunk in a secluded speakeasy or high up on a rooftop, the city’s world-class mixologists create some irresistible concoctions. Here are Hong Kong’s best cocktail bars for a guaranteed good drink.
Bar De Luxe
Founded in partnership withlegendary bartender Hidetsugu Ueno — the man behind Tokyo’s world famous Bar High Five — and helmed by his protégé Yuriko Naganuma, cocktails don’t come much better than the ones Bar De Luxe. Everything is top quality from the drinks to the service and even the excellent bar snacks provided free of charge.
J. Boroski
The stunning interior design by Ashley Sutton — responsible for several of Hong Kong’s best-looking bars – isn’t the only memorable aspect of J. Boroski. The cocktails are fantastic too. There’s no menu here, customers simply answer a handful of questions: Strong or mild? Sweet or sour? Floral, herbal or spicy? And are shortly presented with a cocktail tailored to their exact specifications.
The Old Man
A Hong Kong original, The Old Man is a brilliant new cocktail venue founded by Agung Prabowo, James Tamang and Roman Ghale — three men with experience across a number of the city’s most revered older bars. Service is always warm and friendly, and the cocktails top drawer. Tucked away down an alley off Aberdeen Street, be sure not to miss it.
PDT
Only the second outpost anywhere in the world of the famous New York speakeasy that was once crowned ‘best bar in the world’, PDT has been an exceptional addition to Hong Kong’s bar scene. The menu is an attractive mix of NYC classics and cocktails specially created for Hong Kong. All are guaranteed winners.
VEA Lounge
Just one of local legend Antonio Lai’s many outstanding bars, VEA Lounge sits beneath its equally brilliant sister restaurant on the 29th floor of The Wellington. The broad range of signature cocktails is phenomenal. Nowhere else in the city will you find drinks with tasting notes like ‘nostalgic’, ‘feathery’ and ‘ethereal’ and experience flavours that match.
Alibi
There are many decent bars in the heaving neighbourhood of Mong Kok but Alibi stands clear above all others as the area’s most sophisticated cocktail bar. Resident mixologist Leo Cheung trained at Butler (see below) and his drinks are always spot on.
Butler
Where other high end Tsim Sha Tsui bars try to impress with spectacular views of the Hong Kong Island skyline, Butler wows with exceptional cocktails. Founded by Masayuki Uchida, a man who has worked in some of Ginza’s finest cocktail bars, staff’s meticulous approach ensures every drink is a miniature masterpiece.
