Tip back the best cocktails in Asia’s best bars in Hong Kong

Time Out Hong Kong
  • Written by Time Out Hong Kong
bar tender

The annual Asia’s 50 Best Bars showcases the best and most innovative cocktail bars in this region. Voted for by industry professionals — bartenders, industry consultants and writers — Hong Kong has always pulled its weight in these prestigious awards ever since they started in 2016. This year the city had seven bars that made the cut. Here they are and here’s what you need to know.

old-man

No.2 — The Old Man

The highest entry on this year’s list, The Old Man has wowed not just Hongkongers but drinks experts from around the world. Established by three friends all with experience of working at Hong Kong’s most prestigious hotels, this bar — hidden down an alley off of Aberdeen Street — provides notably enthusiastic service as well as excellent drinks.

Coa

NO. 3 — Coa

This agave spirit mecca owned by Jay Khan is among Hong Kong’s most-loved bars, with the accolades to match. Coa specialises in signature cocktails made with Mexican spirits including tequila and mezcal, and can be credited with influencing an agave spirit revolution in Hong Kong. Every cocktail is infused with Jay’s seemingly boundless knowledge of his craft, and so we urge you to sit down at the bar, soak up the ambience and allow the staff to make a mezcal convert out of you!

quinary

No.16 — Quinary

Local hero Antonio Lai’s first bar, Quinary deserves legendary status in Hong Kong. When it opened in 2012 it was the first bar to bring ‘multi-sensory mixology’ to the city. The bar remains cutting edge and its foam-topped Earl Grey Caviar Martini, complete with globules of ‘earl grey caviar’, is one of the most recognisable cocktails in Hong Kong.

The Wise King

No. 18 — The Wise King

Ranked number 18 on Asia’s 50 Best Bars list, this recent venture established in 2019 is a gem of a bar in a quiet Central alcove. Helmed by Sandeep Kumar (two-time Bacardi Grand Prix National bartender award champion), The Wise King offers stellar cocktails paired with one of the most imaginative ambiences to be found anywhere in Hong Kong.

8½ Otto e Mezzo BOMBANA

No.28 — 8½ Otto e Mezzo BOMBANA

Often overlooked as a drinking destination — not a surprise when your bar is part of the only Italian restaurant outside of Italy to have three Michelin stars — 8½ Otto e Mezzo BOMBANA is finally getting credit for its drinks as well as its food. That’s thanks to Devender Kumar, bar manager and a Bacardi Legacy winner, whose signatures, The Optimist and Pocket Square, are unmissable.

There is certainly no shortage of top-notch drinking holes to enjoy a tipple in Hong Kong, with several establishments making the top 30 best bars in Asia. A newly added bar on the list is Caprice Bar at number 34, which is known for their wines, mixed drinks and cheeses. The Pontiac, number 35, is famous for it’s grungy aesthetic and spot on drinks in a fun, dive bar atmosphere. Rounding out the Hong Kong establishments on the list is number 44, the mainstay Lobster Bar and Grill, which debuted in the Island Shangri-La in 1991 and where the moniker ‘East-meets-West' is embodied in cocktail form.

Hong Kong is known for multitudes of exciting things to do and one of its many draws is the excellent nightlife and entertainment. Enjoy the delight of a night out in the city with these great deals at HolidayHK.com.
