Sharp Island: an ode to nature

Moonrise in Daylight by Breakthrough Art Studio, featured at the Sai Kung Hoi Arts Festival

Sharp Island is one of the most accessible UNESCO Global Geopark attractions in Hong Kong. Its narrow shape is the result of a 140 million-year-long migmatisation of volcanic ash, lapilli, and lava. On the island, a mysterious pathway — a natural tombolo — appears at low tide and disappears when the tide bulges.

Three works of art can be seen along the Sharp Island Country Trail, Kiu Tsui Pier and the lighthouse near the tombolo. They were created by textile artists of Breakthrough Art Studio, paper sculptors of Stickyline, and illustrator Maoshan Connie in collaboration with ceramics studio St. James’ Creation. The artists hope to reconnect the audience with nature and inspire them to explore Sharp Island’s unique eco-features.

A Grane Pineapple Bun Tour took inspiration from the ‘pineapple bun rocks’ on Sharp Island

A Grand Pineapple Bun Tour

by Maoshan Connie and St. James’ Creation

Wandering around the island, you will find rocks that resemble pineapple buns. The artists drew inspiration from local stories of this classic snack and the peculiar rocks to create ten colourful ceramic art pieces placed along the Sharp Island Country Trail.

Ocean Says takes the shape of a giant geometric conch

Ocean Says

by Stickyline

Take a moment to have a meaningful conversation with the ocean on the sea-locked Sharp Island. Stickyline’s installation on the pier features a giant geometric metal conch. It boasts a hollow interior that records and amplifies the sound of the waves. Stand inside and take a listen — what is the ocean trying to tell you?

Moonrise in Daylight comprises a giant bamboo-weaved sphere and 12 smaller spheres

Moonrise in Daylight

by Breakthrough Art Studio

Inspired by the ever-changing tombolo, Breakthrough Art Studio created this giant bamboo-weaved sphere that looks different depending on the angle you view it from while crossing the tombolo. Around the giant sphere are 12 bamboo spheres of varying sizes that serve as sundials.
