Whisky lover’s guide to Hong Kong

Whisky Lover’s Guide to Hong Kong

Hong Kong has one of the best bar scenes anywhere in the world and whisky is a particularly popular tipple. In fact, there are so many good options for drinking whisky, the choice can be overwhelming. In case you’re not sure where to go, here are seven standout whisky bars among the city’s best.

Club Qing

Club Qing

If you think Lan Kwai Fong is merely a series of raucous, down and dirty bars, then think again. High above the throng on the 10th floor of the Cosmos Building sits this cosy bolthole. A relaxed, quiet spot, Club Qing is home to an impressive variety of more than 150 whiskies that’ll keep you coming back for more.

Ginger

Ginger

Hidden behind a discreet grey door on On Wo Lane, Ginger is home to more than 300 whiskies. Whether you’re after a bottle from Scotland or Japan, or something more adventurous like a drop from Tasmania, you’ll find what you want here.

Mizunara: The Library

Mizunara: The Library

If the name sounds odd, know this: Mizunara is a library for whisky. Tucked away on the fourth floor of an anonymous commercial building in Wan Chai, the bar has a superb collection, especially of Japanese types. Don’t believe us? Try the Nikka 40, a blend that contains whiskies up to 40 years old. It’s only HK$8,000 a glass.

Ronin

Ronin

A sister establishment to the renowned Yardbird restaurant, which is within walking distance, Ronin boasts not only exceptional Japanese cuisine but a mighty fine range of whiskies from the same country. There are rarities here you’re not likely to find anywhere else. They also offer a mean range of whisky highballs if you’re after something longer.

Butler

A slice of Tokyo in downtown Tsim Sha Tsui, Butler ;is a place for exceptional service, cocktails and whisky. The menu may not list too many varieties but customers are encouraged to speak with the bar staff and to try the many different off-menu bottles. Head to the sixth floor for the best selection.

Stockton

Stockton

Another secluded bar — this one down an alley off of Wyndham Street — Stockton is designed like an Edwardian London member’s club. Settle down in one of the bar’s comfy alcoves and take your pick from the bar’s assortment of more than 150 great whiskies.
