Hong Kong's Best Live Music Venues

The raucous bars and clubs of Lan Kwai Fong often dominate any discussion of things to do come nightfall in Hong Kong, but there’s much more to the city’s nightlife scene than that. If you want to sip a drink and tap your feet to the rhythm of some live music, you’re in the right place. There’s a truly excellent selection of venues with regular live music nights that cater to all tastes. Here are our favourites.

1563 at the East

1563 at the East

This huge, 6,000 square foot space opened in 2016 and was designed with live music in mind. No surprise then that it has quickly established itself as one of the coolest live venues in Hong Kong. The Wild Wild West event here every Wednesday evening runs the full gamut of folk, rock, jazz, funk, R&B, soul, Latin, reggae and everything in between, so there’s always something for everyone!

This iconic building — a Victorian era monument — houses one of the most dynamic performance venues in the city, taking in countless live music performances. Expect everything from jazz, rock, blues and a whole lot more.

Dusk Till Dawn

Dusk Till Dawn

The least “classy” venue on this list, if it’s a more gritty experience you seek, Dusk Till Dawn is for you. The excellent live cover band provides a down and dirty, party-fuelled music bonanza that’s great if you’re looking to cut loose and dance the night away without a care in the world.

Gecko

Gecko

Plenty of bars try to do the whole Prohibition speakeasy thing, but nowhere in Hong Kong pulls it off with quite as much flair as Gecko. With some of the best live jazz in the city — a mix of well-established acts, open mic and jam nights — catalysed with a dizzying array of Whiskies, this plush venue oozes class. Keep an eye on their Facebook page for weekly live music schedules.

The Wanch

The Wanch

Offering live music all week long with zero cover charge, The Wanch has been delighting music fans in Hong Kong for more than 30 years. Any night is worthwhile here but we suggest catching the acoustic happy hour which typically runs Monday to Friday from 6pm to 8pm.

Ned Kelly’s Last Stand

A masterclass in old-school showmanship, this Tsim Sha Tsui mainstay’s house band play live every night. Expect loads of jazz and blues classics peppered with some hilariously entertaining skits (you haven’t lived until you’ve seen a grown man use a tea pot as an authentic musical instrument).
